Raising brine shrimp to adult

Posted by Leonard on March 18, 2010 at 8:37 PM

I have received many email regarding to raise brine shrimp to adult and I decided to address this issue by writing an article.

So why raise brine shrimp eggs to adult? Adult brine shrimp are full of protein and a good source of food for your bigger fish.

To raise brine shrimp to adult, siphon the brine shrimp from your hatchery into a bigger vessel. I recommend at least a 1 gallon size vessel, a bucket will do fine. Add dechlorinated water to your vessel and add 2 tablespoon of non-iodized salt per liter of water. A PH of 8.0 is ideal and adding baking soda can help you achieve the correct PH. Please wait 24 hours before feeding brine shrimp because as a baby shrimp, brine shrimp will live off their yoke sack. Once 24 hours elapse, it is time to feed your brine shrimp. I recommend feeding them spirulina powder which you can purchase at my store for optimal health. An alternative is baking yeast which you can feed to brine shrimp. To feed spirulina powder, add just a pinch of spirulina powder or yeast per day. Be careful to not overfeed which can lead to polluted tank. Feed every other day prevents murky water.

Cleaning the tank is important. A way to not siphon the shrimp is to siphon water using an airtube and an airstone so the little shrimp won't get sucked up. Replace water with salt water. Cleaning the tank once a week is optimal.

The next step is patience. If you follow all those steps above, your brine shrimp will become full size in 1 month. Once adult size, just siphon the shrimp and feed them to your fish.

I added the 1/4 teaspoon of spirulina powder as instructed to my 2.5 gallon tank, and left it there for the day. However, when I got home, the whole tank was very murky, and there was a layer of green residue at the bottom of the tank. Am I doing the wrong thing? Please advise.

Hi Alwin, I updated my blog and in order to fix this issue, I recommend adding a pinch of spirulina powder instead 1/4 teaspoon. Also, try feeding every other day.

Do you need to use an air pump to grow out the Brine Shrimp to adult? Thanks

Air pumps are not necessary to grow brine shrimp to adult but if you do use air pump, make sure the aeration is not too strong as when hatching brine shrimp.
